Sustainable Trust (UK)

The Sustainable Trust (ST) was formed by and for a group of people including voluntary groups and small businesses working in association with each other to improve the understanding and implementation of sustainable practices. Building on the principles of Local Agenda 21, recommended at the first Earth Summit we think globally and act locally to conserve natural resources, and effect small changes to our environment. The Sustainable Trust was granted charitable status in spring 2002. We tour with an exhibition for schools, libraries, conferences and green events. ST believes that in order to minimise the environmental impact of our actions, we must be concerned with food production, waste, transport, buildings, communities and health. All these things have a bearing on our enjoyment and quality of life, and an effect on those who will follow us here. We manage 40 Hectares of historic Estate woodland helped by volunteers. Planting is done where ever possible, and have had trees planted in Sri Lanka for us in recognition of our post tsunami work there. Visiting Sri Lanka for talks with the Centre for Environment and Development (CED) on the formation of an Eco-village with ‘right livelihoods’, trustee Owen Fenn and Administrator Pip Richards watched the tsunami unfold and were lucky to escape.

Few of the projects that The Sustainable Trust are involved with are:

  • Co-ordination of the ‘Ditch the Plastic-Make Helston Fantastic’ Campaign, aiming to be the first town in Cornwall to go Plastic Bag Free. See http://helstonbagfree/index.html

  • "Reinventing Rubbish" an exhibition of Arts and Crafts made from waste, held Camborne with free art workshops for children, at half term.

  • Rejuvenating Crenver Grove, the Dandelion Trust Nature Refuge. Opening it to the public for education and ecotherapy.

  • A traveling exhibition of sustainable building, publicity and supply of interior effects for the RuralZED, a zero carbon development at "The Sky's the limit".

  • Delivery of medical aid to the tsunami stricken orphans at Peraliya, Sri Lanka in February 05

  • An ongoing programme of recovery at Madampagama, a neglected coastal village a few miles further north.

  • A digital short for Electric December illustrating how the children of Lanlivery School could make sustainable Christmas presents and cards. This school has a sustainable classroom with a "green" sedum roof and an organic garden.
